paradigm • \PAIR-uh-dyme\ Audio iconnoun
*1 : example, pattern; especially : an outstanding example or archetype
2 : a philosophical and theoretical framework of a scientific school or discipline

Example sentence:
In operation for over 50 years, the Bergs’ restaurant has long been a paradigm of efficient small-business management.

Did you know?
“Paradigm” traces to a Greek verb meaning “to show” and has been used in English to mean “example” or “pattern” since the 15th century. Some debate exists, however, over what kind of example qualifies as a paradigm. Some people say it’s a typical example, while others insist it must be an outstanding or perfect example. The scientific community has added to the confusion by using it to mean “a theoretical framework,” a sense popularized by American scientist Thomas S. Kuhn in the second edition of his influential book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. In that work, Kuhn admitted that he had used “paradigm” in 22 different ways. Some usage commentators now advise avoiding the term entirely on the grounds that it is overused.

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Where the Wild Things Grow

I have a love hate relationship with my lawn and flower beds. On one hand, I really want them to look healthy and weed-free. And I want the benefit of having someting lovely to look at and smell.

On the other hand, it takes a lot of work to keep up the lawn and flower beds. I’m not doing an especially good job of weeding and maintenance but for the most part they all seem happy in a sort of chaotic free-for-all way.

One thing I have discovered is that when I let the little buggers have their way, some interesting plants pop-up where I least expect it.

Case in point, the tomato plant that is the offspring of a plant I had last summer. I choose not to tomato this summer because I had hoped to be in Ireland learning ancient Greek and off to UCLA after that. I didn’t want to plant the buggers only to have them ignored.

Jig of Life

Ireland Coast
Can’t you see where memories are kept bright?
Tripping on the water like a laughing girl.
Time in her eyes is spawning past life,
One with the ocean and the woman unfurled,
Holding all the love that waits for you here.
Catch us now for I am your future.
A kiss on the wind and we’ll make the land.
Come over here to where When lingers,
Waiting in this empty world,
Waiting for Then, when the lifespray cools.
For Now does ride in on the curl of the wave,
And you will dance with me in the sunlit pools.
We are of the going water and the gone.
We are of water in the holy land of water
And all that’s to come runs in
With the thrust on the strand.

If I Could Only Find a Fellow Geek!

CNN.com has a thought-provoking article on a new approach to male/female relationships!

I have to admit to doing this with my last boyfriend who lived with me but slept in a his own room on the other side of the house. We would bond together via IM and send each other links while only a few feet away from each other. It’s a little different in the article, but I can see how easily this sort of interaction would develop.

And no, I’m not going to tell you why he slept in a room across the house. Nosey!
