Five by Five - The Intro

For the next five Sunday’s I’m gonna post a blog on five topics - an artist (writer, poet, painter, musician), a person, a place, a thing and an event which has had a lasting impact on the way I think and live . It should not only be an interesting exercise for my mind, but should help me in improving my writing skills too. As Alton Brown says ‘Uni-tasking things are bad, multi-tasking things are good.” So this here is a nice multi-tasking thingy!

Rum All Out

Blackbeard

“Such a day, rum all out: Our company somewhat sober: A damned confusion amongst us! Rogues a-plotting: Great talk of separation so I looked sharp for a prize: Such a day found one with a great deal of liquor on board, so kept the company hot, damned hot; then all things went well again.”
One of several memoranda, said to be in Blackbeard’s own hand, found aboard the sloop Adventure, after the pirate was slain at Ocracoke Inlet in 1718.

For the last ten years or so local archaeologist’s have been working on proving whether or not a ship wrecked just off the coast near Beaufort (that’s NC no SC) is Blackbeard’s very own Queen Anne’s Revenge.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge Project site has loads of great info and pics to boot. If you’re interested in perusing the artifacts, here’s a link to get you there. In case you couldn’t tell, maritime history is a big deal in these parts us being on the ocean and all. And so pirates like Blackbeard are significant figures in the local history not only because they were responsible for some of the more colorful stories about our area, but recovered artifacts can help researchers determine what life was like back in the day.

This latest story is quite exciting primiarily because this could be the proof needed by researchers that it is indeed Blckbeard’s ship. As the article states, ‘this could be the smoking blunderbuss’! I love that!

Here’s the full article with a nice pic of the encrusted bell. Now if I could just figure out how to get involved on the darn project life would indeed be grand!

The Battlship 5K, The Follow-Up

Well, gentle reader, I didn’t make it to the run. But before you say anything let me explain. I had every intention of going and even splurged on a new Ipod Nano for the run. But the weather was poo and I didn’t want to run in the cold, wet windy ickiness that was race day.

I did get up at 5:15 AM not because of my alarm but because the freaking storm woke me up! That’s how icky it was. But from what I understand people still went out there and ran a good race. I do know that the wind was so strong that it blew down the timing clock multiple times even though it was weighted down. The clock broke so they didn’t even have a proper timing of everyone’s results! Instead they had multiple people at the finish line with stop watches. Poor things!

Moving Up In the World

Good news, gentle reader! The garage door has at last been painted white!! Yes, my good people, no longer can my neighbors mock me or point at my house while saying ‘the ghetto-assed one at the end of the block’. Now they must say ‘oh, that’s the the nice looking one who’s garage door is no longer a heinous blue’.

For two long years I’ve suffered righteous indignation that my garage door was blue…an evil ugly blue that the previous owner thought good. The previous owner had TREMENDOUSLY bad taste. To counteract their evil ways, I painted the rest of the blue accents black and topped it all off with a lovely colonial red door. But I ran out of steam and didn’t have the oomph to finish and paint the garage door. Till now!

I know what you’re thinking…thank goodness she finally got motivated because I was SICK of looking at that nasty blue door. Ha ha ha! I fooled you! I hired someone to do it! I got a handyman to come over and take care of it for a small fee. And that was the best money I’ve spent in a while. What a difference a day makes!

It’s soo cute now!

Egads, I’ve Been Distracted

Sorry kids for the no-update on the blog thing lately. My real estate school is a leetle time consuming and there are a bunch of other deep, dark reasons for my lack of motivation. But I’m not going to chat about them here. Just know that I will have more free time very soon! In a few weeks (like 4!) my class will be over and I will be sitting for the state licensing exam. Hopefully, I will pass and be transmogrified into a uber successful real estate broker overnite!

Also, volleyball will be over too. I’ve been playing on a league team which started the same week as school. Class is Tue and Wed nites while volleyball is Thurs nites. That leaves little room for all the other stuff in life! And can you believe work has ben so busy I don’t have time to read blogs much less post on them?!! I mean, how rude! That’s what work is for, right?!

(In fact, right now while my bossies are meeting with some people behind closed doors, I am sneak-typing this post and will try to catch up reading other blogs. Shhhh! Don’t tell on me!)

Well, that’s all for now gentle readers! See ya soon!
