WOTD - bailiwick

Ya I know…I’ve totally slacked on WOTD the last bit of ‘06. But ‘07 is here! New Year - New Rules! Ha! (Thanks Princess Courtni for that spiffy little saying!)

bailiwick • \BAY-lih-wik\ • noun

1 : the office or jurisdiction of a bailiff

*2 : a special domain

Example Sentence:
Since the organization of the annual holiday party is Rhonda’s bailiwick, you’ll have to let her know if you plan to bring something to the festivities this year.

Did you know?
The first half of the word “bailiwick” comes from the Middle English word for “bailiff,” in this case a term referring to a sheriff or chief officer of a town in medieval England, not the officer who assists today in U.S. courtrooms. “Bailiff” derives via Anglo-French from the Latin “bajulare,” meaning “to carry a burden.” The second half of “bailiwick” comes from “wik,” a Middle English word for “dwelling place” or “village,” which ultimately derived from the Latin “vicus,” meaning “village.” (This root also gave us “-wich” and “-wick,” suffixes used in place names like Norwich and Warwick.) Although “bailiwick” dates from the 15th century, the “special domain” sense did not begin to appear in English until the middle of the 19th century.

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

King Tut’s Demise

Well there seems to be some evidence that old Tut possibly died of ‘complications from a leg break’ - I guess that would be gangrene or something terribly icky if there was an accompanying soft tissue wound to go along with the break.

Team Looking At Tut's Mummy

Or he was a diabetic which they couldn’t treat back in the day, ate too much ‘fast’ food and had a heart attack or was done it by that nasty leg break because he didn’t take good care of it (boys will be boys afterall). Or he could have been murdered by poison. But so far no one knows for sure. What they do know is that he wasn’t done in by the blow to the back of the head. That came after death, possibly as a result of Howard Carter’s handling of the body. The CT scan proved that beyond a doubt.

Here’s a pic of Dr. Zahi Hawass (closest thing to a hero for me) with Tut before the CT exam.
