Playing Cards for History

Iraqi Bad Guy Cards
Remember back in the beginning of the war troops were issued playing cards with the bad guys pictured on them?

Well, now that most of the bad guys are MIA or dead the Department of Defense has come around to realizing the importance of cultural sites within Iraq. At last! According to the article it was all due to the efforts of a group of Middle Eastern archaeologists who recognized the need to educate military men and women about the rich history of the places they are being deployed. Thankfully, the Department of Defense listened. I know it’s only because they hope to “win the hearts and minds” of the Iraqi people to win the war, but I’m glad that this one tactic will help to preserve some of the most important sites in the world.

In case you’re not sure why Iraq is important perhaps knowing it was formerly called Mesopotamia, also known as the “Cradle of Civilization.”

UNICEF Report on Worst Industrialized Nations for Children

Old Will said it best, “I was born to speak all mirth and no matter.” This generally describes not only me in person but the nature of this blog.

But this little news nugget was too distressing to skip over.

The UK is the worst place for a child to live with the US in second place. I find it interesting that it didn’t get much play in the US media.

I found this article only because I frequent non-US media outlets in an effort to see how the world perceives America.

The Kid’s Day At The Beach

So it’s hotter than the sun here lately so I decided to pack us all up and hit the beach. I being the pale one in the family shunning most forms of sun worship of course stayed out of the pics. You’ll thank me on that one!

WOTD - jocose

jocose Pronunciation • \joh-KOHSS\ • adjective
*1 : given to joking : merry
2 : characterized by joking : humorous

Example Sentence:
In the office, B’s lively, jocose personality keeps everyone smiling and upbeat.

Did you know?
When you need a word to describe something (or someone) that causes or is intended to cause laughter, you might pick “jocose” or a synonym such as “humorous,” “witty,” “facetious,” or “jocular.” Of those terms, “humorous” is the most generic and can be applied to anything that provokes laughter. “Witty” suggests cleverness and a quick mind, while “facetious” is a word for something that is not meant to be taken seriously. “Jocose” and “jocular” both imply a habitual waggishness and a fondness for joking.

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
